Dr Ahmed was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The water, which drains Lough Lannagh, is particularly high at the moment after recent heavy rainfall.

Her colleagues at the Mayo University Hospital were comforted as they found out the devastating news.

A post-mortem is now scheduled to take place the same hospital.

The Gardaí are calling for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to come forward with any information. Any road users who were nearby between 10 pm and midnight are urged to come forward with camera footage (including dash cam) to give to the police.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
