Radio DJ Chris Evans has revealed how he and his wife Natasha have been teetotal for more than 67 days after realising that alcohol took the shine off his life.

Speaking on the Rich Roll podcast he said drinking ‘stopped working for him’ – and so he woke up one morning and just decided to stop.

’67 days ago I had my last drink – and my wife! And we stopped on a Saturday morning,’ he said, at the time the podcast was recorded earlier this month.

He said ‘nothing really’ was happening, adding: ‘Why does anybody drink, why does anybody consume anything from the outside in to pursue pleasure – for various reasons at differing times in one’s life.

‘I went to this meeting on the beach the other day and this guy described it beautifully and said “you know for a long time when I was drinking and I was using and abusing things and substances and people and having a great time – you can have all the fun, then you have a lot of the fun and a few problems, then you have more problems and a bit of fun, and then you just have the problems,” that’s one way of describing it.

‘Another way of describing it would be that you used to have a drink to take the edge off – well I found that we used to have a drink and it was taking the shine off, because our life was shining and I suddenly felt like whatever was working before wasn’t working now.’

‘Why would you rough up your own diamond, as it were,’ he added.

Mr Evans’ ex-wife Billie Piper previously described her booze-fuelled marriage to Chris Evans as being drunk ‘for five years with an old man’.

She said she had a lot of ‘baggage’ to deal with when she moved into acting after her pop career fizzled out, having married Evans then aged 35 in 2001 when she was 18. ‘A lot of it was just tabloid fodder,’ she told The Guardian.

‘Rather than ‘Oh, she was a pop star’ it was more, ‘She was a pop star, then she got p***ed for five years with an old man.’ I think that was the lasting image when I walked into an audition room.’

The couple split when she was 21 and divorced in 2007, but remain close friends, she said, hailing their relationship as a happy experience.

‘Loved it. Loved that time. Learned so much,’ she said. ‘Really needed it, after the experiences that I’d had, leading up to that point. And I felt like I’d actually found a real friend.

‘I guess meeting someone who had experienced [fame] for 20 years, at that level, it was very nurturing. And also very drunken, which I needed. I had a lot of fun during those years.’

Mr Evans revealed he has stopped drinking as he also told fans he has been diagnosed with the early stages of skin cancer.

During his Virgin Radio Breakfast Show on Monday, the presenter said that, because it was caught quickly, it is ‘as treatable as cancer can possibly be’.

The 57-year-old told listeners: ‘I’ve just got to talk briefly about my biopsy for the skin cancer issue.

‘So, the best news that I got whilst I was away is that it was a positive test, so I have tested positive for skin cancer.

‘Obviously better news would have been (that it was) negative. But the reason it’s great news is because they’ve caught it as early as they can, as early as is possible.’

The former BBC Radio 1 and 2 presenter told listeners that he got tested because his masseuse, whom he described as an ‘angel sent from Heaven’, encouraged him to go after she spotted an unusual looking freckle on his skin.

He added: ‘Because they caught it so early, it’s as treatable as cancer can possibly be to the extent that… some specialists refer to it as ‘stage zero’ or ‘pre-cancer’.’

He said the next step is for him to get ‘a square of skin taken off’ on September 14.

The broadcaster added that he has thanked his masseuse for ‘potentially saving my life’ and urged others to get any symptoms examined.

‘Just check yourself for stuff, as you get older especially, on your skin, on your bits and your bobs,’ he said.

‘Just keep checking, because the biggest weapon in your arsenal, in our our collective arsenal against things that are out to get us is early detection. And so please do that.’

In 2015, Evans was given the all-clear following a prostate cancer scare.

He was a presenter on Channel 4 shows The Big Breakfast and TFI Friday and hosted various shows on BBC Radio 2, including his long-running breakfast programme which he left in 2018 to move to Virgin Radio.
