When naming a new royal baby, there are certain traditions that the Royal Family like to stick to.

More recently babies born into the family have been given far less formal names, however, they are still in keeping with royal heritage. Nine of the late Queen's descendants are named in her honour, even if they don't share her first name.

Princess Charlotte, Princess Anne and Princess Lilibet are all among the close relatives that have been named after Queen Elizabeth II.

They could also be attributed to the Queen Mother or Queen Elizabeth I, who were all named after each other.

However it's clear that when the Prince and Princess of Wales decided to name their daughter Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana in 2015, that it was a nod to her great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and her grandmother Princess Diana.

Similarly, when Prince Harry and Meghan welcomed their daughter in 2021, she was named Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

As a result, Charlotte and Lilibet are both named after Queen Elizabeth II – with Lilibet's name being the Queen's famous family nickname.

Other members of the family to be named after the former monarch include Princess Beatrice (Beatrice Elizabeth Mary), Zara Tindall (Zara Anne Elizabeth) Isla Phillips (Isla Elizabeth) and Lady Louise Windsor (Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary).

As Princess Charlotte grows up , she will be entitled to inherit a senior title when her father Prince William is King.

In the years to come, Charlotte could be styled as The Princess Royal – the current title of Princess Anne.

The Princess Royal is typically the eldest daughter of the monarch but the inheritance of the title is not guaranteed if the previous holder is still alive.

For Lilibet, Prince Harry and Meghan also want her to have a title. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the couple didn't wish to deny their children their "birth right."

Following the news of Lilibet’s christening, a spokesperson: “The children’s titles have been a birthright since their grandfather became monarch. This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace.”

On 9 March, the Buckingham Palace website’s line of succession page was updated to reflect Archie and Lilibet’s new titles, with the children currently 6th and 7th in line to the throne respectively.

While discussing their child on their Netflix docuseries released in December 2022, Harry and Meghan said their youngest child and her similarities to the prince's mother and her relations.

Referring to his daughter by her nickname, Harry lovingly said: "I see a lot of my mom in Lili. She's very Spencer-like. She's got the same blue eyes."

Meghan agreed and said: "blue, blue, blue eyes."
