The heatwave hitting the UK is a “start of season bonus” according to an expert meteorologist as autumn begins with a scorching week.

Temperatures are set to skyrocket to 30C as the holidays end and children head back to school.

The heatwave has come after a disappointing July and August which saw weeks of cloudy skies and mild temperatures.

Speaking exclusively to the Express, Jim Dale of British Weather Services put the heatwave into context and what this could mean for the rest of the month.

It is an extreme temperature to have a high point in September rather than at any other point of the year.”

With such an extreme start to autumn, some are concerned this heatwave is being driven by climate change.

Mr Dale provided more detail. He said: “I would say it’s still in context with what we might get from time to time, it’s not necessarily a climate-induced event.

“Having said all of that the sea temperatures around us make that more possible. I think if we were seeing 35 and 36C I would say it’s worrying.

“I think the worrying is being done and is happening in other parts of the world. I think in the general sphere of things I’d say we’re quite lucky compared to what we’ve seen.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. There’s every chance that September could go the way of June and I’m not saying it will.

“I’m just saying we live in uncertain times, we live in interesting times and what that means is the stronger possibility of exceptional months like we saw in June.”

While this heatwave isn’t something to worry about. Mr Dale said the trend of hotter weather was. He explained: “We could well end on the extremes. There’s a lot of the month to go.

“What I am saying is it probably will end up as another well above-average month so we’ll start to move into that category. The trend is the bit to focus on. Weather comes and goes; it ebbs and flows.

“We’re an island, we’re normally temperate, but the trend is one way, the trend is up and although it might come in fits and starts that’s the thing that we will be focussing on as the months and years go on.

“You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
