Wrexham have announced their new Kop stand will not be in place for the start of the 2024-25 season.

The club’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney previously promised to build a new 5,500-seater stand ahead of next season to take the capacity at the Racecourse Ground to 16,000.

However, the League Two outfit have now confirmed this will no longer be possible, and revealed a start date for construction work to begin is yet to be agreed.

A club statement read: ‘The new Kop will not be open for the start of the 2024/25 season with a projected build period of 12 months from commencement on site. There is no date for starting on site, as several matters need to be resolved before that can be confirmed.

‘To enable a contract to build the Kop to be signed, the grant funding agreement from Wrexham County Borough Council needs to be finalised and the Club satisfied that the conditions attached to the funding offer can be fulfilled.

‘It is hoped that these negotiations will be completed before the end of October 2023.’

The club went on to list a number of conditions that need to be met before work on the stand can commence.

One of the conditions concerned gaining clarity from UEFA on the requirements Wrexham must meet to gain Category four stadium status.

UEFA currently rates stadiums in categories from one to four, with the latter value being needed for a club to host games in the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League, Nations League and European Championship.

Reynolds and McElhenney have previously stated their ultimate goal is to take the club all the way to the Premier League, and they appear determined to have a stadium that is fit for the top-flight.

Wrexham gained promotion from the National League last term and have made a promising start to their first season back in the Football League for 15 years.

Phil Parkinson’s men have collected 15 points from their first eight games to move into fourth place, just three points behind leaders Gillingham.
