Social media users have poked fun at Tory conference ‘headliner’ Toploader after they performed Dancing In The Moonlight for party members.

The British band took to the stage on the third day of the Conservative’s annual conference on Tuesday in Manchester, as part of a collaborative event for UK Music, News Movement and TikTok.

MPs, peers and party members were all spotted grooving to the band’s 2000 smash hit, Dancing In The Moonlight – amid a tense conference that has seen Prime Minister Rishi Sunak scrap the Manchester leg of HS2.

Social media users were quick to take to X, formerly known as Twitter, to poke fun at the band for headlining the conference 20 years after their heyday.

One witty Tweeter said: ‘Toploader? They had a hit 20 years ago – you’ll like them!’

Have I Got News For You added: ‘Footage of Toploader performing at the Conservative Party Conference appears online after someone types “worst night out ever” into ChatGPT.

Another said: ‘Spot on for the Tory Party Conference, a performance from a band that had one hit 24 years ago (that they didn’t write).’

A fourth added: ‘I wonder how many bands said no before Toploader said yes.’

Music critic Simon Price recalled: ‘I once hit the guy from Toploader with a champagne cork at the Q Awards, from right across the room. Hell of a shot, but I felt slightly guilty afterwards. (What had he ever done to me, except be in a crap band?) I don’t feel guilty anymore.’

Others were quick to share memes and jokes poking fun at the surprise act.

The footage was uploaded by Conservative social media user Emily Hewertson, who praised the performance as ’10/10′.

Toploader consists of lead singer Joseph Washbourn, guitarist Dan Hipgrave and drummer Rob Green.

Their most famous hit Dancing In The Moonlight is a cover of King Harvest’s 1972 song written by Sherman Kelly.

The song peaked at Number 19 in the UK’s Top 40 chart at the time of its release.

The band initially broke up in 2002 after forming in 1997. However they reformed in 2009 and have been performing again together ever since.

The band is also set to perform at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool next week, according to UK Music.

Last year former X Factor star and Ghost singer Ella Henderson performed at the Tory Conference to much backlash.

She later defended her decision, saying: ‘These events do not indicate political affiliation’.

Rishi Sunak made a pitch to ‘fix’ Britain today as he dramatically cancelled the rest of HS2, which he said would ‘free up’ £36billion for other transport projects all over the country.

In another bold step, Mr Sunak said he wants to introduce a rising age limit on buying cigarettes – so 14-year-olds now will never be able to purchase them legally.

The policy will be pit to a free vote in Parliament, with Liz Truss already pledging to oppose it.

Meanwhile, A-Levels and T-Levels are being merged into a new broader Advanced British Standard, with all pupils studying English and Maths until the age of 18.

Summing up his policy blitz, Mr Sunak said: ‘It’s time for a change, and we are it.’
