And half of these are under-18, figures suggest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/span><span>&#8216;s government has pounded Gaza with a series of devastating airstrikes as punishment for Hamas gunmen massacring citizens on one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar. Almost 4,000 Palestinians have been killed thousands of homes destroyed<\/span><span><span>\u00a0across the 141 square mile region.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A strict blockade also means citizens yet to evacuate following Israel&#8217;s order to evacuate &#8216;immediately&#8217; are facing shortages of food, clean water, medicine, electricity and fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Israeli<\/span><span>\u00a0has tightened its grip on the region after it vowed to &#8216;demolish&#8217; Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Across both Gaza and the occupied West Bank, there are some 5.2million people, according to UN estimates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Palestinians are among the youngest populations in the world, with a median age \u2014 the exact midpoint \u2014 of just 19.6 years. In comparison, the figure stands at 40.1 in Britain and 38.1 in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the occupied Gaza and West Bank territories could not be more disparate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The majority of Gazan residents are refugees, and interactive graphics prepared by MailOnline show huge differences in the lifestyles and prospects of those in the coastal enclave compared to those living in the West Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Gaza, the unemployment rate is close to 45 per cent, and is higher among females than males. In comparison, unemployment in the West Bank is somewhere in the region of 15 per cent as of 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But even those fortunate enough to have work in Gaza are on dismal wages, taking home a daily wage of 61.6 new Israeli shekels (NIS), about \u00a312.51, in 2020.
