A couple was left stunned and is now venting after a Georgia\u00a0restaurant added a $50 ‘unable to parent’ surcharge to their bill over their ‘loud’ children’s alleged bad behavior.<\/p>\n
Lyndsey Landmann and husband Kyle slammed Toccoa River Restaurant in Blue Ridge, with Kyle taking to\u00a0Google two weeks ago, to leave a review saying he was ‘disappointed by the experience.’<\/p>\n
‘The owner came out and told me he was adding $50 to my bill because of my children\u2019s behavior,’ he wrote. ‘My kids watched a tablet until the food arrived, ate their food and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill.’<\/p>\n
Kyle’s wife, Lyndsey, told\u00a0TODAY that she was appalled – and insisted her brood\u00a0 was well-behaved.<\/p>\n
The Florida couple was with their three young boys and four other families. Eleven children sat at the table, ranging from three to eight years old.<\/p>\n

‘The kids were sitting at one end of the table and they were being so good,\u201d Landmann said. ‘I even commented halfway through the meal, “I can\u2019t believe how well-behaved they are.”‘<\/p>\n
After dessert, some of the parents took their children down to the water – and that’s when restaurant owner Tim Richter approached, Landmann said.<\/p>\n
Richter told the party about the additional charge on the menu, which reads:\u00a0‘Adult surcharge: For adults unable to parent.<\/p>\n
‘Be Respectful to staff, property, and self. No Respect, No Service.’<\/p>\n
Landman said she was expecting a compliment and to be told they wouldn’t be charged, but Richter said there would be $50 added to each bill at their table.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When Landmann asked for an explanation, she claimed Richter told her they were being ‘too loud.’<\/span><\/p>\n He was angry that the kids were ‘running around outside,’ even though they were chaperoned by adults, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n ‘I was like, “They were quiet the whole time.” He got in our faces and told us that we belonged at Burger King and not at his restaurant. We asked to speak to the owner and he said he was the owner,’ Landmann explained.<\/p>\n ‘I looked around the restaurant and everybody was frozen watching this show he was putting on. He was yelling.’<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The menu notes an ‘adult surcharge’ for ‘adults unable to parent’<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lyndsey says she was appalled when Richter told her about the charge, as the children ‘were being so good’<\/p>\n <\/p>\n She claims the owner became enraged and began yelling at her, drawing the attention of other diners<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is located over an hour’s drive from Atlanta, perched along a river<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The eatery offers traditional American dining and seafood such as shrimp, scallops and fish<\/p>\n Richter declined to appear on camera, but he told Channel 2 News he implemented the surcharge a few years ago during the pandemic.<\/p>\n The 61-year-old said he never threatened to charge anyone until a couple of weeks ago when a family visited whose nine children were ‘running all over the restaurant.’<\/p>\n Richter said he never actually charged the family, only giving them a warning, and added: ‘We want parents to be parents.’<\/p>\n However, several other Google reviews blasted the quality of the service and the owner’s attitude, including one that warns diners with children to steer clear.<\/p>\n ‘We were three adults, two children and our 4mo baby and since we entered to the place they gave us a bad look,’ one review reads.<\/p>\n ‘Later my wife was rocking the baby (not crying, just to make him sleep) and this “manager” told her that you don\u2019t do that in a fancy restaurant (of course this is not a fancy restaurant) and later moved our stroller in a bad way.’<\/p>\n One woman who claims to have been to the restaurant wrote: ‘I also have been on the waitress side of this. Your $5 tip isn\u2019t worth the headache of listening to your kid scream, throw food, or trash on the floor table or at someone. Why not control your child! Or eat at HOME!’<\/p>\n The restaurant is tucked away in the mountains, about a two-hour drive from Atlanta.\u00a0<\/p>\n It offers entrees like catfish, shrimp and scallops ranging in price from $21 to $39.\u00a0<\/p>\n The menu says customers will be charged an extra 18 percent gratuity for parties over six people, parties that ask for separate checks, and parties that order from the birthday menu.<\/p>\n There is also a $3 surcharge listed for sharing food. A note specifies that the prices on the menu are for cash payments only, and says there will be an extra 3.5% charge for non-cash payments.<\/p>\n
