<\/p>\nA HOSPITAL has declared a 'major incident' and evacuated its maternity ward after the entire building lost power.<\/p>\n
Blackpool Victoria Hospital suffered a blackout after the basement of its Women and Children's Unit flooded overnight.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Babies and expectant mothers were moved to beds in other parts of the hospital while some patients were told to rearrange operations and appointments.<\/p>\n
Other patients are being urged to not visit unless essential, as the entire hospital is still without electricity or network access.<\/p>\n
The NHS Trust said all patients currently staying at the hospital are safe and are continuing to receive care after fire crews scrambled to the scene.<\/p>\n
NHS Trust boss Trish Armstrong-Child said: "Overnight, the basement of the Women\u2019s and Children\u2019s Unit at Blackpool Victoria Hospital experienced severe flooding. <\/p>\n
"This has led to a loss of power and network access to the entire building.<\/p>\n "We have received support from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to reduce the localised flooding.<\/p>\n "Further work is required today to clear the area of standing water.<\/p>\n "Due to this incident, we have contacted patients to rearrange their elective surgery where necessary. <\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n "If you haven\u2019t been contacted, please attend your appointment as planned.<\/p>\n She added: "Outpatient activity due to take place in the Women\u2019s and Children\u2019s Unit is being individually risk assessed and where appropriate diverted. <\/p>\n "We have contacted patients to cancel or rearrange their appointment as necessary. <\/p>\n "If you haven\u2019t been contacted, please attend your appointment as normal.<\/p>\n "Please be assured that all patients within the hospital are safe and continue to receive appropriate care. <\/p>\n "The hospital\u2019s urgent care pathway is also currently under a lot of pressure. <\/p>\n "We are appealing to our communities to think before attending our Emergency Department and to use NHS111 for advice and guidance."<\/p>\n Earlier today the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff triggered its highest-level "black alert" because of "significant and sustained demand".<\/p>\n The local health board said that the Emergency Unit is particularly affected, and that the hospital is working to speed up the discharge of "medically fit" patients.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/newspress-collage-24653798-1699338465482.jpg\")
