David Cameron vowed to put development ‘right back at the heart’ of the Foreign Office in his first speech after taking his seat in the Lords.<\/p>\n
Following his surprise political comeback, the Tory former prime minister was officially introduced to the Upper House as Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton yesterday.<\/p>\n
The Foreign Secretary wore traditional scarlet robes for the short ceremony as he swore the oath of allegiance to the King.<\/p>\n
Then, in a speech closing the Global Food Security Summit in London, Lord Cameron pledged that the UK will continue to lead efforts to tackle food insecurity.<\/p>\n
He said he would ‘put development right back at the heart’ of his department.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In his first major speech since becoming Foreign Secretary, Lord Cameron told the event: ‘Food is the foundation of all aspects of development. Malnourished children can never fully develop their bodies and minds.’<\/p>\n

Lord Cameron pledged that the UK will continue to lead efforts to tackle food insecurity<\/p>\n
He described food insecurity, with a third of the world unable to afford a healthy diet, as a ‘silent crisis’ that cannot be separated from other crises such as the Ukraine conflict.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘The UK will continue to lead efforts like this,’ he told the gathering.<\/p>\n
Lord Cameron cracked a joke about his wife Samantha, saying: ‘I’ve had an extraordinary day going to the House of Lords… taking the oath and all the rest of it. So, I’ll go home and tell Mrs Cameron she’s now Lady Cameron. She’s absolutely furious about that.’<\/p>\n
He also launched a White Paper setting out the UK’s views on international development up to 2030.<\/p>\n
