We all know about the tourist meccas of Europe – from Paris to Rome. But if you\u2019re after the road less travelled, then the Norwegian city of Trondheim might just fit the bill.<\/p>\n

The city – which served as the capital of Norway until 1217 – came out top of a list of \u2018The most underrated European cities and towns\u2019 in Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveller.\u00a0It lies on the south shore of Trondheim Fjord at the mouth of the River Nidelva and has a population of just over 200,000.<\/p>\n

The rundown of top cities said: “Between 1050 and 1536, Trondheim was one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The city has one of the best hotels in Norway (Britannia Hotel) and several Michelin-starred restaurants.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHere you can see the beautiful Nidaros Cathedral, the medieval Archbishop\u2019s Palace, Sverresborg Tr\u00f8ndelag Folk Museum, and other interesting museums.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not all – with river boat rides on offer and nearby skiing which is world-class, with World Cup winter sports competitions held regularly at Gran\u00e5sen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is also known as known as Norway’s capital of technology – due to the significant technology-oriented institutions headquartered there including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Cazzy and Bradley, from travel blog Dream Big Travel Far, wrote about their trip to the Norwegian city.<\/p>\n

They said: \u201cWe loved Trondheim. It\u2019s a beautiful place with cobbled streets, lots of shops, a beautiful old town and a great cathedral.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe visited in late November when the Christmas lights were all over town and it was even more awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n
