Absolutely Fabulous actress Jane Horrocks has laid the blame for her freshly broken wrist square at the feet of her local council who she claims have not done enough to remove dangerous black ice from roads.

The actress, 59, told her fans the scary news that she was left injured after hitting a patch of black ice while cycling in Brighton.

She wrote on Twitter: ‘Thank you all for your well wishes. I have a broken wrist and bruised ribs, so not too bad in the grand scheme of things.

‘So many people in A+E yesterday had fallen on black ice and there was quite a lot of anger towards Brighton and Hove City Council for not gritting the roads.’

The Met Office had warned that it would be a ‘frosty’ on the day Jane fell and Brighton and Hove Council themselves have apologised for accidents but stressed they cannot grit every road.

The star, 59, took to social media to share with her fans the scary news that she was left injured after hitting a patch of black ice while cycling in Brighton

The chairman of the council’s transport and sustainability committee, Trevor Mutten told the Telegraph: ‘We’re very sorry to hear that some people were injured slipping on ice on Tuesday night.

‘Our gritters were in action across the city on Tuesday from late afternoon onwards.

‘Unfortunately we cannot grit every single road in the city. We’re not aware of any councils in the country that do so.

‘We grit around 156 miles of road around the city. We prioritise main A roads and most B roads, bus routes, links to schools and roads that lead to hospitals or are key for emergency services.

‘We would always advise people to be very careful during icy periods, as even gritting cannot absolutely guarantee a road will be free of ice.

‘Our gritting programme is routinely reviewed and we are keen to hear from local communities to inform planned gritting routes improvements.’

Jane added that the accident has taught her: ‘Maybe these accidents occur to say Slow Down.

‘We do so little of that, that sometimes it takes something stronger to enforce rest. I’m grateful for the guidance.’

Jane also thanked two strangers for their help after the accident as well as the hospital staff.

She explained: ‘A lovely couple helped me when I fell. They got me a cup of tea and brought me home.

‘Thank you to them and the lovely Scottish nurse who put my arm in plaster when all the other ‘plasterers’ had gone home.’

Her fans were quick to take to the comments to send her well wishes and a speedy recovery.

Absolutely Fabulous, also known as Ab Fab, was created by Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (From L-R: Jennifer, Julia Sawalha, Jane and Joanna Lumley)

She added cowboy boots, a long denim skirt and a large copper bag for an eccentric look – 30 years on from the first episode of Ab Fab.

Jane is set to star alongside The Fast Show’s John Thomson in Stuntman, which is directed by real-life stunt daredevil Damien Walters.

Last year Jane accused television producers of ‘churning out’ the same actors for leading roles.

Quizzed on how she felt about Olivia Colman, Keeley Hawes and Lily James being handed all the coveted telly gigs while at The Space event in Brighton, she responded: ‘And Sarah Lancashire.’

She continued: ‘I think it’s a bit limiting for the audience to see the same crowd always coming on.

‘I just feel sorry for the audience really that the commissioners and the producers are so short-sighted that they have to keep churning out the same people.

‘They do an amazing job and if they’re being offered the roles then, of course, you take them,’ she said, before adding that she deems this to be ‘slightly dull.’

Elsewhere during the discussion, Jane, who also starred in the 90s musical film Little Voice, admitted she’s always been nervous with ‘sexy’ roles and described herself as ‘not very good at them.’
