Witnesses have been left baffled after a coffin ended up on the side of a busy motorway after being chucked out of a hearse that had erupted into flames.

The elaborate wooden casket was snapped sitting on a grassy verge by the M8 motorway near north Cork, Ireland, on Tuesday (December 5). A video taken at the scene also shows the hearse-style Mercedes van which had been carrying the coffin badly damaged after it caught fire while driving, reports The Irish Mirror.

In the clip, a man can be seen walking towards the coffin before declaring: "It isn’t every day you come across this, lads." It is understood the hearse suffered a technical fault as it was transporting the casket from Cork to the Irish capital of Dublin.

Sources confirmed the coffin didn't contain any human remains when it was thrown out of the car. Nobody was injured during the bizarre incident, the Irish Mirror reports.

A spokesperson for Cork County fire service said the events unfolded at around 9.20pm between junctions 14 and 15 of the northbound carriageway of the M8. Fire personnel from nearby Fermoy and Mitchelstown stations attended the scene and managed to get the blaze under control.
