Black Friday actually starts on November 24 but there are already plenty of deals on the market including discounted prices and offers of free access for a limited time.
November is always a top time to look at switching suppliers but joining someone new this month does come with a warning. The team at BroadbandSavvy say although there are solid deals on the market it’s important to follow some very simple advice before making any long-term decisions.
Top tips include checking your local area for so-called Alt-networks – which can often be cheaper than the main providers – as well as checking what speeds you really need as the faster your broadband the bigger the bills.
It’s also a good idea to check for in-contract price hikes and watch out how well the new provider performs in customer service surveys.

Here are 5 useful tips to help you get the very best deal this Black Friday
1. Check out ALL providers
We’ve all heard of BT, Sky and Virgin Media but there are loads of smaller firms popping up all over the UK with many offering very fast speeds at much lower prices. Community Fibre, for example, is currently dishing ludicrously quick 1Gbps downloads for just £26 per month – that cost beats most of its rivals.
“Nearly all British broadband providers offer different levels of discounts during Black Friday sales,” explained Tom Paton, founder of broadbandsavvy.com.
“If you aren’t aware of all the different providers that service your address, you might miss out on finding the cheapest or fastest deal you can get.”
There are three main categories of broadband providers available in the UK:
Openreach: BT’s broadband network, which is available almost everywhere in the UK. Providers include BT, Sky, Plusnet, TalkTalk, NOW Broadband, and more.
Virgin Media: Virgin’s broadband network, available in 56% of the UK.
Altnets: small, independent broadband providers that service specific cities, towns, or counties. Providers include Community Fibre, Hyperoptic, CityFibre, and more.

“At the moment, these small networks are fighting tooth and nail for market share, meaning they often offer very competitive prices, especially during Black Friday sales.”

The price cuts affect a wide range of products including its standard superfast broadband and its ultrafast broadband packages.

2. What speeds do you really need?
It sounds obvious but the faster your broadband the more you’ll pay. It’s easy to get carried away when choosing your download speeds and you could end up splashing out on a service you don’t really need.
For example, a home with a couple who stream and send the odd email only needs speeds of around 70Mbps. However, if you have a busy home full of people downloading, playing games and working then faster 300-500Mbps will stop the stuttering.
“For most households, there’s no point paying £50-£60 per month for a 500-1,000 Mbps broadband connection,” Paton said. “A 100-200 Mbps tariff will offer plenty of speed, even if you have a large family. And for singles and couples, 50-100 Mbps should suffice.”
3. Keep an eye on your contract
Almost all ISPs will offer a discount when you sign up. However, when the deal ends things can jump pretty significantly. That’s why it’s vital to keep an eye on your contract and get ready to switch when it comes to a close.
Another top tip is to watch the Black Friday deals and take your time as most offers will be available throughout the whole of November. In fact, the closer we get to the big day the better the deals.
Explaining more Tom Paton said: “The best time to place your order is in the week leading up to Cyber Monday. Don’t be afraid to take your time to find the best deal, but don’t leave it beyond the end of Cyber Monday, or you might find some deals disappearing.”

4. Bills can go up
While Black Friday broadband deals can help consumers save 20% or more on a new broadband tariff, compared to the regular monthly cost, it is important to be aware of how mid-contract price rises may affect the monthly cost in future.
“It’s very common for broadband providers to automatically increase your monthly cost each year, in line with inflation,” Paton explained.
“The problem is, they don’t just increase the fee you pay by the inflation rate – they add on an extra increase of 3-4% as well. This means that if inflation is high, you might find that your monthly cost increases 10 or even 15 percent a year from now, wiping out your Black Friday savings.”
5. How good is your new supplier?
Deals might look good but don’t be left with a service that’s sub standard. Some suppliers are performing better than others when it comes to customer satisfaction. UK regulator Ofcom recently released new stats – find out the best and worst UK suppliers here.
Expalining more Paton said: “While buying the cheapest possible Black Friday broadband deal may seem tempting, it’s important to check how good each provider’s customer service is before entering into a contract,” added Paton.
“The last thing you want is to be facing issues with slow speeds or poor Wi-Fi signal, once you switch providers.”
