Millie Bobby Brown, 19, reveals fiancé Jake Bongiovi, 21, made her ‘love herself’ again after she was cruelly branded a ‘stupid brat’ as a child star – as she covers Glamour’s Women Of The Year in 90s-themed shoot

Millie Bobby Brown has revealed that cruel taunts she received as a child made her too scared to speak out in public, until she met fiancé Jake Bongiovi.

The actress, 19, burst into the limelight at the tender age of 12 when she was cast in Stranger Things but was shocked when cruel adults branded her ‘an idiot,’ ‘stupid,’ and ‘a brat.’

Reflecting on the cruel taunts in a candid chat with Glamour magazine, she mused: ‘I was just penalised for overtalking and oversharing and being too loud.’

Millie – who has received one of Glamour’s coveted Women Of The Year accolades –  admitted she ‘didn’t ever want to talk again’ at the fear of being trolled but confessed ‘When I met Jake I just felt I could be loud. He embraced that and encouraged that. And I fell in love with myself while being with him.’

She added of her fiancé – who is the son of legendary rocker Jon Bon Jovi – ‘He was a really big, huge part of me loving myself and becoming a woman. It was like, “Wow, I really love this person because he allows me to love myself.”‘

Millie and Jake announced her engagement in April after two years of dating with an Instagram post showing off her glimmering rock.

Using a Taylor Swift lyric for her caption, she wrote: ‘I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ’em all.’

Jake also shared the announcement to his own page, simply writing ‘forever’ alongside two snaps of the couple.

The actress – who said she ‘is perfectly aware’ that many think she’s too young to tie the knot – previously told how Jake has been ‘very involved’ in the wedding planning, telling NBC’s Today show: ‘He’s very helpful during the whole process.

‘I’ve never felt alone in it, which is very nice. I’m always like, ‘Is this a good idea, is this a good idea?’ But ultimately, it’s just a very intimate day for the both of us and we’re both very excited.’

Millie also confirmed that Jake’s father Jon will not be performing at their wedding.

She said: ‘I feel like that’s asking me to go and like, do a full-on play for everyone.

‘I think the man needs a break, he doesn’t stop! He’s always doing tennis or singing lessons. I think he needs a break, maybe it’s a three-hour break!’

Millie has had to cope with the pressures of fame from a young age and recently revealed she has her team ‘censor’ her social media feeds so that she only sees ‘positive’ posts after finding the platforms had a detrimental effect on her mental health.

The British actress said shutting out negative content has given her ‘mental freedom.’

Millie Bobby Brown’s team censor social media feeds to only include ‘positive posts’ after it had ‘detrimental effect’ on her mental health

‘I personally feel it wasn’t adding anything to my life. And I felt positive when I didn’t have it on my phone,’ she said of deleting her social media apps.

‘I just felt like I could live my life with more confidence and freedom, mental freedom. I just feel better for it,’ she told Women’s Wear Daily.

She added: ‘But that doesn’t mean that the good social media I don’t get to see: I just have a wonderful team that kind of censors it all, so that I can protect myself.’

Despite not looking at them often herself, Millie still uses social media platforms to promote her makeup brand Florence by Mills, and has her team send customer reviews to her.

‘TikTok, Facebook, Instagram — I love seeing the way people use Florence. It’s really cool. Even though I don’t have those social medias actually on my phone, I get to have people send them to me.’

As well as her makeup range, the prolific star produced and starred in Netflix’s Enola Holmes film, is a Louis Vuitton ambassador and has just written her first novel, Nineteen Steps.
