The beautiful city that’s one of Europe’s best despite getting few tourists

We all know about the tourist meccas of Europe – from Paris to Rome. But if you’re after the road less travelled, then the Norwegian city of Trondheim might just fit the bill.

The city – which served as the capital of Norway until 1217 – came out top of a list of ‘The most underrated European cities and towns’ in Condé Nast Traveller. It lies on the south shore of Trondheim Fjord at the mouth of the River Nidelva and has a population of just over 200,000.

The rundown of top cities said: “Between 1050 and 1536, Trondheim was one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The city has one of the best hotels in Norway (Britannia Hotel) and several Michelin-starred restaurants.

“Here you can see the beautiful Nidaros Cathedral, the medieval Archbishop’s Palace, Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum, and other interesting museums.”

And that’s not all – with river boat rides on offer and nearby skiing which is world-class, with World Cup winter sports competitions held regularly at Granåsen.

It is also known as known as Norway’s capital of technology – due to the significant technology-oriented institutions headquartered there including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Cazzy and Bradley, from travel blog Dream Big Travel Far, wrote about their trip to the Norwegian city.

They said: “We loved Trondheim. It’s a beautiful place with cobbled streets, lots of shops, a beautiful old town and a great cathedral.

“We visited in late November when the Christmas lights were all over town and it was even more awesome.”

And it seems that fellow tourists agree – declaring their love for Trondheim on the travel review website TripAdvisor. Hoards of visitors reviewed their experience of exploring the quaint area of Bakklandet, which is rated on the site as the number one thing to do while in the city.

One said: “If you come to Trondheim this is probably the most beautiful part of the city. It is what you quintessentially expect from a Norwegian town, with a kaleidoscope of beautiful houses and small streets.

“There’s less traffic than in other parts of the city and also a plethora of small shops and cafes to while away an afternoon in.”

Another said: “The iconic Bakklandet houses on the Nidelva are truly stunning, the view of them from the old town bridge is fantastic. We also managed to view them with the backdrop of a rainbow which added to the view.”
