The beautiful mountain village so remote there isn’t even a road to get to it
A pretty little village hidden in the picturesque Swiss Alps is one of the world’s most beautiful with its scenic hiking trails and endless opportunities for winter activities. Wengen, a charming village set on a shelf overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley is among the best destinations to visit during the winter season.
The town offers a serene escape for nature lovers with miles of scenic hiking trails. It is a car-free zone that allows visitors to get immersed in its beauty – there isn’t even a road to access the village. Guests can stroll to St. Bernard Anglican Church to explore the beauty of the countryside.
To retain its authenticity, the village can be reached only by cog railway, so it has remained mostly traffic-free. However, one may find electric vehicles run by hotels and a few petrol vehicles including taxis.
The railway continues up the mountain, as one of the ski lifts. The alternative way up is by cable car, which has cabins with roof-top viewing platforms, from the centre of the main street, The Telegraph reports.
The village remains busy throughout the year as travelers can be seen in Wengen every month. However, twice as many tourists spend time in the area during the winter than during the summer.

Cold-weather destination
This is because Wengen is known for being a cold-weather destination with excellent skiing. The busiest time of year is mid-January when the famous Lauberhornrennen Ski Race takes place.
Despite the importance of skiing in the area, summer is also an excellent time to visit the area. Many people interested in a relaxing vacation head to the area during this time to enjoy the clean air and peaceful life in the area.
The local ski area has 103km of pistes. In total the Jungfrau lift pass covers 211km of pistes and is served by 45 lifts and covers the separate ski areas of Mürren (linked by cog railway and then cable car) and Grindelwald First (reached via Grindelwald village, where there’s a bus). The ski area suits intermediates best but the slopes in Mürren offer some challenges.

Breath-taking views
The views from the ski area are a highlight, with the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains making a magnificent backdrop
The tourist destination is hugely popular on Tripadvisor with many calling it “the most beautiful place on Earth”.
One person wrote: “If you want quite and peacefull place for romantic vacation far away from everybody that is Wengen in September. We had amazing weather and enjoyed beautifull scenery all around us.
“Wengen is the best place as a base to visit all Bernese Oberland region. Places you must visit: Jungfrau and Schilthorn. We rented small challet thru local challet rental service and we had a felling that we are in our own house. Just perfect.”
Another said: “We made our second trip in 8 years to the Bernese Oberland in Sept. 2009. On the first trip, we stayed in Interlaken. This time we chose Wengen, which we preferred. It is a car-free town and is therefore very quiet. If you prefer a quiet, laid-back, small-town atmosphere, this is for you.
“It is a good location for day trips to the Jungfrau, Schilthorn, and the numerous small towns in the area. The scenery is out of this world. We love Switzerland and believe that this has to be the most scenic part.”
