British Soap Awards are CANCELLED after Phillip Schofield stepped down
British Soap Awards are CANCELLED: ITV make surprise announcement ceremony will not take place next year after Phillip Schofield stepped down from hosting duties
Next year’s British Soap Awards have been cancelled.
ITV have announced the ceremony, which celebrates the best of British soaps, will not take place in 2024.
The broadcaster has not given an explanation as to why it will not take place.
An ITV spokesman said: ‘The British Soap Awards won’t be on air in 2024 but is set to return in 2025.
‘The show was fantastically received in 2023, achieving consolidated figures of 2.9million and doubling its audience year on year, so we look forward to the show’s return.’
It comes after ITV were thrown into chaos ahead of the ceremony in June after Phillip Schofield stepped down from hosting duties.

2023 crisis: It comes after ITV were thrown into chaos ahead of the ceremony in June after Phillip Schofield stepped down from hosting duties. Jane McDonald replaced him as host
Bosses had to draft in Jane McDonald as a last minute replacement after confirming the 2023 ceremony would go ahead as planned.
The operatic singer and cruise ship favourite, 60, was revealed as Phillip’s replacement after he quit ITV and was dropped by his talent agency YMU after admitting to an affair with a young male This Morning colleague.
He confessed to having the ‘unwise but not illegal’ relationship with a man during his marriage to Stephanie Lowe, and previously denied the affair when asked about it by his agent.
The presenter, 61, confirmed in a statement at the time that he had stepped down from all his ITV jobs, including the ceremony.
The awards show is usually broadcast on ITV and was first held in 1999, although both the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Phillip presented the ceremony from 2006 to 2022. From 2006 and 2008, he hosted the programme with his former This Morning co-star Fern Britton.
After it was announced Jane was taking the helm, fans hailed the star as the ‘perfect choice’ to front the ceremony.
Ahead of hosting the awards, Jane said: ‘Oh my god…..everyone knows how much I LOVE my soaps, this year I’ve been honoured to be mentioned in Corrie, EastEnders and Emmerdale, so this is just a dream come true.’
With Jane a hit among viewers as host, the sudden cancellation of the ceremony will be a shock to soap fans.

It’s over! One soap that won’t return when the ceremony comes back in 2025 is Doctors after it was axed

This year, EastEnders’ Danielle Harold took home the Best Leading Performer prize at the award show held at The Lowry in Salford.
The star-studded evening saw a whole host of famous faces collect gongs for their work, with Danielle’s BBC soap EastEnders winning the coveted Best Soap prize, while Charlotte Jordan triumphed in the Best Dramatic Performance category for playing Daisy Midgeley in ITV’s Coronation Street.
Coronation Street won the most accolades of the night, with six prizes including for Best Single Episode and Scene of the Year for the show’s depiction of an acid attack carried out by Justin Rutherford (Andrew Still), who had been stalking Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan).
One soap that won’t return when the ceremony comes back in 2025 is Doctors.
The BBC has axed the soap after 23 years of failing ratings.
The cast and crew of the iconic soap were reportedly called into a meeting with channel bosses earlier this month where they learned the tragic news, after a bid to move the show to a primetime slot failed to draw in audiences.
Revealing the news in a statement, the BBC said: ‘We have taken the very difficult decision to bring daytime drama Doctors to an end after 23 years.
‘With super inflation in drama production, the cost of the programme has increased significantly, and further investment is also now required to refurbish the site where the show is made, or to relocate it to another home.
‘With a flat licence-fee, the BBC’s funding challenges mean we have to make tough choices in order to deliver greater value to audiences.
‘We remain fully committed to the West Midlands and all of the funding for Doctors will be reinvested into new programming in the region.
‘We would like to thank all the Doctors cast and crew who have been involved in the show since 2000.
‘We know the crucial role Doctors has played in nurturing talent, and we will work to develop new opportunities to support skills in scripted programming.
‘The final episode will screen in December 2024 and we are working closely with BBC Studios to give it the finale it deserves.’
